International Master Arthur Ssegwanyi got himself moving on the right direction at the Henry Chilufya Memorial Chess tournament – the GM Norm tourney – with victories over Zambian IMs in the third and fourth rounds on Saturday.

The Olympian started the round robin event with defeats to IM Mwali Chitumbo from Zambia and fellow Ugandan FM Harold Wanyama, but Saturday came with double delight for the IM as he downed both his opponents.

Ssegwanyi beat IM Gilian Bwalya in the third round before seeing off IM Phiri Richmond in the subsequent round to register his first and second wins at the five-day event.

For Wanyama, he fell prey to Chitumbo who has thus far proven a hard nut to crack. The FM, however, recovered against Chitumbo’s compatriot IM Stanley Chumfwa in the fourth round.

Next up for Ssegwanyi is an uphill task against the highest rated player in the competition, Grandmaster Adly Ahmed. With exception of the Russian GM Petr Kiriakov who he drew with, the Egyptian has beaten all his opponents including Indian GM Gupta Abhijeet and GM Greenfeld Alon from Israel.

That’s the opposition awaiting Ssegwanyi in the fifth round, and in the sixth round, he faces another arduous task as he comes up against Gupta. The Indian lost to Adly but he beat Kiriakov.

Wanyama meets Bwalya in the fifth round and in the sixth round, takes on Phiri.
