The Kakyeeka soggy pitch on Saturday

Mbarara City inflicted damage on former champions Police with a 2-1 win on a soggy Kakyeeka pitch on Saturday.

Two goals from dead ball situations produced goals thanks to Hilary Mukundane and Siraje Musindo goals while Basan Saafi pulled one back for the visitors.

The rains started to fall as teams started to warm up forcing referees to retreat to the change rooms before both teams also followed.

However, moments later, the visitors returned under the guidance of assistant coach John Luyinda and the heavy downpour forced a 25-minute delay to kick off.

Efforts to have the flooded pitch back to normal were futile and just four minutes into the game, a clearance from Madoi fell on water and Musindo then lifted the ball on Madoi’s arm for a free kick.

Yesseri Waibi curler was headed into the net by Mukundane to put the hosts in an early lead.

Ben Ocen then hit the base of the post with a long range effort five minutes later before Hood Kaweesa also headed on the bar.

Abdallah Mubiru was forced to withdraw Albert Mugisa for Saafi who equalised with his first touch on the ball heading home Gift Ali’s well weighed corner.

Ali Kimera then denied Madoi with a marvelous save whilst Steven Mugisha nearly scored into his own net with a miscued clearance that kissed the base of the post.

Ten minutes into the second half, another poor clearance by Martin Mpuuga saw him foul and from the dead ball situation, Musindo curled the ball past the wall and into the net.

First, the assistant signaled no goal but was overruled by Rajab Bakasambe and it was 2-1.

Mubiru made other changes with Ali paving way for Norman Ogik and later Ocen came off for Ruben Kimera as Police searched for a leveller.

Ogik low shot was parried away for a corner by Kimera while Paul Wila hit the cross bar with a headed effort.

The hosts held on under pressure to claim maximum points to move Vialli Bainomugisha’s charges to 8th on the log with as many points.

Police remain 5th with 10 points, three adrift of log leaders Onduparaka.
