Rotary Uganda, NARO sign MOU to provide technical support to Mission Green

The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) and Rotary Uganda have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to plant over 20million trees. The purpose of this MOU is to get into a partnership in support of Mission Green. The two entities look to restore a green environment through afforestation.

The officials during a meeting at Colline Hotel Mukono on Thursday said that due to the fact that the population is cutting down trees and reclaiming swamps some rivers such as River Rwizi in Mbarara District have dried up, there is a need to plant more and more trees.

The understanding will last five years and a total of 20million trees are expected to be planted within that time” noted The Rotary District Governor for Tanzania and Uganda, Kenneth Mugisha said that; “We shall cooperate with NARO to help us define where to plant these trees and the type of trees fit for each area selected,” said Mugisha.

The NARO Director General, Dr. Ambrose Agona said that different kinds of trees will be planted. Among them will be fruit trees, Eucalyptus, and pine.

“We lose about 200 hectares of trees per year. Therefore; to revive our environment, we need to do a suitability map to avoid planting trees anyhow and anywhere,” said Agona. The other NARO and Rotary officials that were present at the event were; the Director National Forestry Resources Research Institute, Hillary Agaba, the Country Chair Rotary Uganda, Rebecca Mukasa and the NARO  Principal Public Relations Officer, Charlotte Kemigyisha.
