Do you often times spend a lot of time lingering over nude pictures or “sexy hot babes” on Facebook? Then, please don’t log into Facebook on your computer at work, lest someone eavesdrop and see what you wouldn’t rather that they saw. Wondering why?

On Friday June 12th /2015, Facebook announced that the algorithm it uses to determine which content appears first in user News Feeds will now take into account how long users spend viewing posts.

In a Blog Post titled “News Feed FYI: Taking Into Account Time Spent on Stories,” Facebook Software Engineers, Ansha Yu and Sami Tas explained what the newsfeed has always been about, what has always determined what appears in one’s newsfeed, and why it is important to this time, take into account the time spent on a given post even when no actions such as liking, commenting or sharing occur.

According to Facebook research, they have “learned that in many cases, just because someone didn’t like, comment or share a story in their News Feed doesn’t mean it wasn’t meaningful to them.

There are times when, for example, people want to see information about a serious current event, but don’t necessarily want to like or comment on it.”, hence the decision to update the News Feed’s ranking “to factor in a new signal—how much time you spend viewing a story in your News Feed.” Facebook has started rolling this out and will continue over the coming weeks.

According to the post though, there shouldn’t be any significant changes for Pages in distribution as a result of
this update.
