Ngamba at 20 Celebrations Spiced as Dr. Jane Goodall Arrives

World famous chimpanzee conservationist Dr.Jane Goodall DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace has arrived in Kampala today, 6 June 2018. She is a Special Guest at Ngamba Island’s grand 20th anniversary celebration, scheduled to take place at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Thursday, 7 June 2018.

Dr.Goodall’s arrival represents a commitment to ensure that her vision and life’s work continue to mobilize the collective power of individual action to save the Chimpanzees in Uganda.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is currently home to 49 orphaned, and confiscated chimpanzees, rescued from the illegal pet and bushmeat trade. Since 1998, Ngamba opened new doors in great ape rehabilitation and conservation which has enabled it focus attention of the global community on the plight of man’s closest relatives and their environment.

Dr. Jane will meet the chimpanzee care givers and tour the 100- acre Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary, located 23 kilometres off the shores of Entebbe where the endangered animals receive an enriching experience.

Dr. Goodall is celebrated for her groundbreaking research and publications on wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, and as the first to introduce the observations that chimpanzees have distinct personalities and behaviors, like those of humans, into the scientific world. Her continued research of about 60 years is the longest wild primate study in the world. As a result of her efforts, the world launches the first ever World Chimpanzee Day to be held on July 14 in commemoration of the day she first set foot in Gombe to study Chimpanzees.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, is currently in a $1 million fundraising campaign for an endowment fund to sustainably manage the sanctuary over the next years.

About Jane Goodall

The 84 year old has dedicates her time to advocacy on behalf of Chimpanzees and the environment. She travels 300 days a year to be a voice for the chimpanzees. As a result, her works have earned her positions, honours and awards. Goodall has received many honours and awards for her environmental and humanitarian work.

She was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire. In April 2002, Secretary-General Koffi Annan named her a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She is a recipient of the 60th Anniversary Medal of UNESCO. Beside becoming the eighth person to be allowed to study for a PhD at Newnham College without first having obtained a BA or BSc, over the years, she has obtained nine honorary doctorates from around the world.

The conservationist is also the recipient of the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, French Legion of Honor, Japan’s prestigious Kyoto Prize, Benjamin’s Franklin Medal in Life Science the Gandhi- King Award for Non-Violence, the Spanish Prince of Asturias Awards, and BBC Wildlife Magazine is proud to have her as one of its member on the advisory board. She has authored books, and has inspired film productions about her works.
