Igara West Lawmaker Hon. Raphael Magezi

Efforts to suffocate Hon. Raphael Magezi and blocking his age limit bill from being a success has taken a taking a new twist.

On Wednesday afternoon, a team of activists have run to court seeking a court injunction stopping any parliamentary proceedings on the controversial bill.

According to the application filed by the Advocates for Human Rights Peace and Development (AHUPED) to the constitutional court, the activists are seeking a bar to parliament from carrying out any activity or processes until a main petition challenging the bill’s constitutionality is determined in full.

In the petition the Age Limit MP is reminded that his sole responsibility is to protect and defend the constitution under article 79(3) thus advising him to drop the private members bill since it violates the oath he took when he was joining parliament.

It further states that while a Member of Parliament is allowed to table a private members bill, it clarifies that his/her powers are limited to other statute bills but not extended to amend the constitution itself.

The activists therefore want the Constitutional Court to halt anything relating to the age limit bill until it has pronounced itself on the constitutional concerns involved in the whole amendments.
