Nagalama Police has cracked a four-man fake MTN recharge cards syndicate. The four men arrested for allegedly forging MTN airtimes cards have been identified as Benin Biraaro, Robinson Muheki, Simon Bwambale and Isaac Akankwatsa.

Police has been trailing the suspects for over seven months before being apprehended. This follows a number of cases of aggravated robbery reported by victims.

According to the investigators, it is alleged that the suspects specialise in printing fake vouchers popularly called recharge cards from Democratic Republic of Congo, seal and then send them to Uganda through Kihihi a small town in Kanungu District, approximately 30 kilometres, by road from the border to be distributed to unsuspecting victims.

The scam was unearthed after a number of complaints reported at police about robbers who pose as dealers in recharge cards.

Its believed that the suspects setup meetings with potential buyers, negotiate a favourable price and at the day of paying for the merchandise they turnup with armed personnel and rob the unsuspecting buyers at gunpoint.

We have arrested four and one other suspect is on the run however we are working with other security agencies to stamp out the scam.

Police recovered Ushs 112.5 million worth of fake airtime recharge cards and the suspects are currently detained at Nagalama Police Station as investigations are ongoing.
