MP Simeo Nsubuga with some Ministers
Kassanda North Member of parliament Hon. Simeo Nsubuga has asked Ugandans opposed to the Age limit removal to cool down and swallow the bitter pill of truth.
Speaking to the Insider this afternoon, Nsubuga noted that bill was passed because it was famous and credible enough to benefit Ugandans.
He added that there is no need of some opposition leaders to run to court because they are busy fighting a lost battle since the bill has gigantic support among both locals, and government officials.
“They should not waste their time going to court because we shall leave them there. This bill was passed in good faith and they had all the capacity to block it in Parliament but they lacked credible points to support their views besides threating people.” Simeo said.
These comments came in a few hours after Parliament revealed that the controversial bill age limit had been signed into an act by the Head of State President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
According the director of communication Parliament of Uganda Chris Obore exposed that the bill was signed on 27th December 2017.
He added that this bill is now an act and already before the Clerk of Parliament Ms. Jane Kibirige.
This moves comes after Legislators passed the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2017 dropping the 75 year upper age limit for presidential candidates and extending the term of Parliament to seven years.
After three days of debate and objections by a section of Opposition, Independent and a few NRM MPs, Parliament approved what came to be known as the ‘Age Limit Bill’ with the required two thirds majority on Wednesday night.
At the third reading, the last stage before a Bill becomes an Act, 315 MPs voted in favour, while 62 rejected the Bill, with 2 MPs abstaining.
